Braces and health insurance - deductible and savings

Recently the media reported that health insurance would cover the costs for braces for children and adolescents under 18 years. What does this mean in detail and which costs will be covered from which health insurance and how much will the costs be for adults?

Beginning July 2015, children under the age of 18 who require braces for medical reasons (category IV and V), will receive them from the respective regional „Gebietskrankenkasse“ (health insurance). This requires the medical necessity - a treatment for purely cosmetic reasons will not be covered. The dentist will evaluate this, based on an international scale.

For young people over 18 years and adults there are the following grants or deductibles, which must be approved individually by the respective health insurance. Basically, the grants and deductibles will be calculated per year; the total cost of braces varies depending on the type of treatment and type of misalignment. It has to be considered that the approval of grants for aligners is not very common.

Deductible for removable braces

The costs for removable braces can be charged on the health insurance as a contract was signed with the dentists. When the application has been accepted the patient must pay only the amount shown on the notice from the health insurance. At the moment (status as of 2015) this deductible differs according to your health insurance:

  • GKK (österreichische Gebietskrankenkassen): 427,00 Euro annually
  • BVA (Versicherungsanstalt öffentlicher Bediensteter): 170,80 Euro annually
  • KFA (Krankenfürsorgeanstalt der Bediensteten der Stadt Wien): 297,00 Euro annually
  • Verk: 427,00 Euro annually
  • SVA (Sozialversicherungsanstalt der gewerblichen Wirtschaft): 456,00 Euro annually
  • VAEB (Versicherungsanstalt für Eisenbahnen und Bergbau): 256,20 Euro annually
  • SVB (Sozialversicherungsanstalt der Bauern): 170,80 Euro annually

Grant for fixed braces

With fixed braces, the patient pays the bill and passes it on to the respective health insurance company to obtain the annual grant. This is then transferred to the patient’s account. Again, the grant varies by health insurance as follows:

  • GKK (österreichische Gebietskrankenkassen): 341,60 Euro annually
  • BVA (Versicherungsanstalt öffentlicher Bediensteter): 1000,00 Euro annually
  • KFA (Krankenfürsorgeanstalt der Bediensteten der Stadt Wien): 686,00 Euro annually
  • Verk: 491,40 Euro annually
  • SVA (Sozialversicherungsanstalt der gewerblichen Wirtschaft): 610,00 Euro annually
  • VAEB (Versicherungsanstalt für Eisenbahnen und Bergbau): 954,00 Euro annually
  • SVB (Sozialversicherungsanstalt der Bauern): 683,20 Euro annually
