The method

What are silver metal braces?

Metal braces are fixed metal brackets that are bonded to the outer surface of the teeth and apply continuous force to the teeth via a wire.

Silver braces are visible on the teeth—that’s what sets them apart from tooth-colored alternatives. On the other hand, they are very durable. The metal itself does not discolor from eating or drinking.

A Direct Comparison

Metal or Ceramic Braces: What's the Difference?

CriterionSilver Metal BracketsCeramic Brackets
AestheticsImmediately visible as bracesTooth-colored, barely visible from a distance
DurabilityVery high; they practically never breakMore brittle; corners may chip when cutting very hard foods
CostsMost affordable option; may be covered by health insurance guidelinesMore expensive; private optional service
DiscolorationMetal never discolors (only the rubber parts)Brackets do not discolor (only rubber bands)

A popular compromise: ceramic brackets for the visible front teeth in the upper jaw, and sturdy silver metal brackets for the back teeth and lower jaw.

Costs

How Much Do Silver Braces Cost in Vienna? Costs & Insurance

Silver metal braces cost about the same as Invisalign® treatment; the exact cost will be determined based on an individual analysis. After your initial consultation, you will receive a personalized cost estimate.

A note on coverage by health insurance: Children and adolescents with severe misalignment are eligible for free braces. Mild cases of misalignment and treatments for adults are generally paid for out of pocket; whether supplemental dental insurance covers part of the cost depends on the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Silver Braces

They cost about the same as Invisalign® treatment; the exact cost is determined based on an individual assessment. For children and adolescents with severe misalignment, there is a free orthodontic treatment option.

Treatment takes 1.5 to 2 years, depending on the misalignment.

Whether the insurance company pays, and how much, depends on the severity of the misalignment and the specific policy.

The procedure is painless; a feeling of pressure in the first few days afterward is normal and goes away quickly.

Opt for soft foods and use protective wax on irritated areas.

No, the metal doesn’t discolor.

Almost everything is as usual. To protect your braces, you should avoid just a few things: chewing gum, sticky candies, and very hard foods like nuts or hard bread crusts.

Silver braces are visible. That’s just part of the deal. Modern versions, however, are significantly smaller and flatter than they used to be.

Please contact the office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. A protruding, sharp wire end can be temporarily covered with a little protective wax.

White decalcification spots (white spots) form when plaque accumulates around the brackets over time. Thorough brushing after meals, using interdental brushes, and regular professional dental cleanings can help prevent them.

Yes. After active treatment is complete, a retainer helps maintain the results so that the teeth do not shift back to their original positions.

Worth Knowing

Things to Know About Silver Braces

Content

Who are silver metal braces the right choice for?

Silver metal brackets are the right choice when a durable, proven solution is the priority and visibility is not a concern. If the patient has a known nickel allergy, suitable components are selected on an individual basis.

Duration of Treatment, First Few Days, and Diet

Treatment with metal braces usually takes about 1.5 to 2 years. The exact duration depends on the severity of the misalignment, the course of treatment, and your cooperation.

In the first few days after your braces are fitted or after an adjustment, you may feel a slight pressure; eating soft foods will help you get through this period. Otherwise, you can eat as usual: just avoid very hard foods like nuts or hard bread crusts, as well as chewing gum and sticky candies.

Cleaning & Oral Hygiene During Treatment

Plaque tends to build up more easily around brackets and wires than on the exposed surfaces of the teeth. Good oral hygiene is therefore important throughout the entire treatment: brush after meals, use interdental brushes for the spaces between your teeth, and visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings. This will help prevent white spots caused by demineralization.
