How much do braces cost?

Once it’s been determined that you need braces, the next question quickly arises: How much will they cost? Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this, since prices vary depending on the type of braces. Due to differing reimbursement rates and copayments from various health insurance providers, the confusion is usually complete. But it’s actually not that complicated.

Cost of Braces for Children and Teens

Parents can breathe a sigh of relief here—for children and adolescents under the age of 18 with severe misalignment of the teeth, health insurance typically covers the full cost of treatment for braces with metal brackets (“free braces”). Only a dentist or orthodontist can determine whether the misalignment is severe enough—we’re happy to assess this during a free initial examination with your e-Card.

The key factor here is the so-called IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) score. If the misalignment is not severe enough, the patient is responsible for the cost of the braces themselves, although health insurance companies cover a portion of the treatment costs in such cases.

Costs for Adult Braces

Adults generally cover the cost of orthodontic treatment themselves, but are often reimbursed a certain amount—which varies depending on their health insurance provider. The total cost depends on the duration of treatment and the extent of the correction needed. At the start of treatment, the orthodontist provides a treatment plan that includes the diagnosis, treatment plan, and the expected duration and cost.

After a free initial consultation (e-Card), we’ll provide you with a cost estimate for your entire treatment. During the initial consultation, we’ll also explain in detail whether orthodontic treatment is necessary and which treatment options are available: For example, fixed braces with metal or tooth-colored brackets, or clear aligners (the Invisalign method), which are particularly popular among adult patients.

Depending on the type of braces and the severity of the misalignment, the respective health insurance providers may offer financial assistance or require you to pay only a copayment. We’d be happy to advise you on this during your initial consultation.

We strictly adhere to the guidelines of the Austrian Dental Association and are therefore not permitted to publish exact prices. However, we would be happy to provide you with this information in person during a no-obligation consultation. Of course, you will not make a decision about orthodontic treatment until we have thoroughly explained the various methods, the treatment itself, and the associated costs to you during a relaxed and personal consultation that includes an initial examination.
